On The Road to Elmena
(11th March '99 - 9am)

Flashbacks
Shackles, chains!
Bleeding human flesh
Sweat, fear,
A combination of smells.
Cutting through my senses,
My defences are down.
Submitted to torture,
Shame powerlessness…..
Now thrown on my face,
disgrace replacing pride,
No longer running, nor hiding,
Nor fighting for my peoples lives.
Unknown destination awaiting….
the frustration at seeing
our elders being tricked
by the oyiegbo man,
taking everything he can.
Our fruits, vegetables, herbs, spices….
Plants with healing or nutritional properties…
Our mineral and human resources…
In exchange for…….
Poisonous gifts of total destruction
and dis-eases.
How could my people not see this
and up to this day still not be seeing
The lies that the Oyiegbo man live on
and rely up on lies to keep us under....

Being Chased
9pm

I remember running
through the streets
of the market place
eyes looking worried
reflecting my terror

Hunted and chased
by evil men
dogs and guns
an unbalanced battle
an unfair confrontation

So I'm running
If I can just reach
the mountains
I'll find a safe place
locate the groups of people
living away from this scene
of brutalisation

To retain the knowledge
given direct from our ancestors
to be used again when the time does come…
